About Mashgal

In every corner and street of Syria, it is not uncommon to come across a passionate artisan practicing his craft away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, or a craftswoman pouring all her effort into a unique work of art, with love and dedication.

For centuries, Syria has been—and continues to be—distinguished by an unparalleled richness when it comes to various aspects of its heritage, both tangible and intangible. One of the most magnificent manifestations of this heritage is Syrian handicrafts, which are so diverse that it is difficult to list them all.

Despite the extremely difficult years the country has endured, artisans have patiently preserved their crafts, because they are an integral part of their lives and identities, and because they know their true value.

Today, the “Mashgal” website launches as the first comprehensive guide aimed at serving as a unifying platform for these artisans, presenting them in a manner befitting their craft, facilitating access to and communication with them, showcasing their work, and highlighting the details of their creative professions—all of which benefits both the artisans themselves as well as those seeking to discover the unique Syrian treasures that fill our cities and towns from north to south and from east to west.
